For purposes of garden planning, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has divided the country into bands, based on average low temperatures. Minot, ND falls into USDA Climate zone 3a in the valley and 3b on the hills or the surrounding prairie areas. Minot Air Force Base (MAFB), ND is located in USDA climate zone 3b. The annual average low temperatures for these two “sub-zones” are -30 to -35F and -35 to -40F. The only perennial plant material that Lowe’s Garden Center carries is specifically for our zone. This includes trees and shrubs, many of which are bred in Northern Minnesota and Southern Canada to be hardy here in Minot and the surrounding communities.
